Italian defender, Giorgio Chiellini has surprisingly rushed to the defence of Luis Suarez, stating his four-month ban is excessive.
In a recent interview, Chiellini, who was the victim of Luis Suarez’s bite in the 2014 World Cup resulting in a four month ban for the Uruguayan from all football activities, feels that FIFA’s ban is excessive and the striker should be allowed to join his new club Barcelona in training for the upcoming season.
“I said what I thought about it even after the incident. I would like them to revise the penalty, although none of these decisions depend on me. I feel it’s a little exaggerated.”
Chiellini accepted Suarez’s apology immediately after the incident occurred and even in June, the Italian felt the ban was excessive.
The Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) has received Suarez’s appeal and will make their ruling on the ban on 8th August.
