Fortuna Dusseldorf defender Leon Balogun has told supersport.com exclusively of his "immense excitement at this opportunity to join up with the Super Eagles for the friendly against Mexico".
Balogun who is now training with the Super eagles in Atlanta ahead of wednesday's international friendly where he hopes to impress Stephen Keshi and millions of Nigerians.
"I had a phone conversation last month with the Big Boss(Stephen Keshi), who asked me how I was and if I was fit and willing to play for Nigeria. I managed not to scream yes, only saying yes quietly. He told me that if some players drop out from his initial list for the Mexico match he will call me. So last week, I get my letter of invitation and ticket and joining requirements for the team"
Balogun flew out of Berlin on an Air France flight where his proud parents live. "My dad is so very proud and nervous for me at the same time" says Leon.
"I know there are players there who have been in the squads longer than me, however, I believe in my ability, I will give my best in training and if I get the chance to play I will show my worth." He is hoping his "worth" will be worthy of a world cup shirt.
"If I make the world cup squad it will be the best thing ever to happen to me because I have always felt Nigerian especially because of my grandma who tried to teach me yoruba over the phone when I was a kid"
Let the Mexicans bring it on.
Leon Balogun had exclusively told supersport.com in december 2013 that he was ready to play for Nigeria after so much speculations about his international choices since he was also eligible for Germany.
