Atletico Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois has adamantly denied reports that he has given Real Madrid a verbal committment to join the cross-town rivals on a free transfer once his contract with Chelsea expires in 2016.
Spanish radio station Cadena SER’s ‘El Larguero’ programme reported on Sunday evening that Courtois had informed Atletico Madrid CEO, Gil Marin that he had given a verbal committment to join Real Madrid in 2016, but the Belgian international has denied the reports.
“It’s totally false. I couldn’t have said anything like that to Miguel Ángel Gil Marin because it’s not true. I don’t have any agreement with any club. Everyone knows that I have a contract with Chelsea and I am happy with Atletico.”
In addition to the statements by Courtois, Spanish sports daily, AS quotes sources to the club stating that “[Courtois] has always been very clear with us and so we continue to negotiate with Chelsea in order to keep him her for many more years.”
Atletico Madrid have proposed a permanent transfer, but it may be out of their price range, but have also suggested Courtois renew his deal with Chelsea, thus allowing him to come on loan once again next year.
