Hummels: Bring on Chelsea, Barcelona or Manchester United

The Germany international is happy to take on the Spanish champions or one of the two English representatives

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels hopes to be paired with either Manchester United, Chelsea or Barcelona during Friday's draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Bundesliga outfit beat Zenit St Petersburg 5-4 on aggregate to make it out of the round of 16 and Hummels is now eager to test himself against a team he has not faced before.

"I'd like to play against a team I haven't played against before in the quarters. Maybe Manchester United, Barcelona or Chelsea," Hummels told the official Uefa website.

"At the end of the day, though, it doesn't matter who we get – they're all going to be difficult."

Hummels then reflected on Wednesday's second-leg against Zenit and admitted that BVB struggled against the Russian side.

"We're obviously pleased to get through. It's difficult when you know a draw or even a defeat could be enough.

"Zenit were a lot better than they were in the first-leg [which they lost 4-2]. I thought Danny in particular had a good game.

"When we went 1-0 down I was thinking: 'Great, that's exactly what we didn't need,' but in the end it didn't matter. Our equaliser calmed us down a bit."

Photos; Riot at Bowen University Iwo last night

There was riot at Bowen University Iwo in Osun State last night. I really don't have all the details but according to what some students told me, the riot was over what they say is lack of basic amenities like water and light as well as what they term 'unnecessary rules & regulations' being made by school management, plus plans to increase their school fees.

The boys destroyed school property, vehicles and vandalized their chaplain's home. While the students were on rampage, the school security personnel fled but the police was eventually called in to calm things down
"Bowenites live by rules, sleep by rules, and eat by rules, but not anymore" one student said
Bowen University is a private university owned and operated by the Nigerian Baptist Convention

Photos: EFCC arrests 4 undergraduates, 3 others for internet scam

This is an EFCC press release. Find it below...
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested four undergraduates and three others for alleged involvement in Internet scam.
They were arrested in two different locations in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The undergraduates are: Otuyalo Damilola (right), a 400 level student of Computer Science of Lead City University, Ibadan; Adegbuyi Michael (left), an undergraduate of University of Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia; Ibrahim Aruna, (centre) a student of Mineral Resources Engineering, Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State and Adeosun Matthew, a 200 level student of Banking and Finance, University of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. Others are Afolabi Ayodele, Balogun Olumuyiwa and Abiola Okunola.

Five of the suspects: Aruna, Matthew, Ayodele, Olumuyiwa and Okunola were arrested together at the Iyana Adeoyo Branch of a first generation bank in Dugbe, Ibadan, while they were collecting proceeds of scam via Western Union.

The other two suspects: Damilola and Michael were picked up in a rented apartment in Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The arrest of the seven suspects followed intense surveillance by operatives of the Commission who had been on their trail for sometime. One of the suspects, Olumuyiwa, admitted conning a white American lady, Sarah Jorth, in a romance scam. He said he was used a false name (Vincente Marco) to deceive her into believing that he would marry her and in the process raked in more than $450,000 ( Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand United States Dollars) from her.

Two other suspects: Damilola and Michael also confessed that they were into Internet scam to make ends meet. According to Damilola, "I am into yahoo yahoo (Internet fraud) and I do this to earn a living. I make use of a laptop to access Internet, to look for vulnerable white men and women who will fall for my scam. I acquired my Infinity Jeep and Honda Accord car through the fraud". He also admitted that he had been in the business since 2010.

Michael confessed that he started Internet scam since 2000 when he was a student at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Even when he moved to Malaysia, he was still engrossed in the business. "Anytime I come home on holiday, I look for vulnerable targets because the rigour of studies in Malaysia would not allow me to do it there,” he said. He disclosed that his specialty was lottery scam.

Items recovered from the suspects include: three laptop computers; one flash drive; two Visafone modems; one traveling passport; one Infinity Fx 35 SUV, one Honda Accord car and some bank documents.

They will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Neymar prepared for El Clásico by spending the day with Thiago Silva at Disneyland Paris

NeymarSilva
Barcelona winger, Neymar was given the day off this past Tuesday and instead of mentally preparing himself for this Sunday’s league-deciding ‘Clasico’ against Real Madrid, the 22-year-old hoped on the first plane to Paris to join his compatriot and PSG captain, Thiago Silva…at Disneyland Paris….

Neymar posted the photo to his official instagram account, with a heartfelt message to his friend, the one that Barcelona let get away.
“A brother can’t be a friend, but a friend can always be a brother.”
Yet, it appears that the visit was a success and Neymar didn’t get sick on the teacup ride, as the superstar was back to work on Wednesday.

Lady beats 10 year old niece into unconsciousness for bed-wetting

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old security guard, Joy Amodu (pictured above), for allegedly torturing her 10-year-old niece, Foziya Danjuma for several hours till the little girl fell unconscious. All because Foziya peed on her bed on February 28, 2014, Punch reports
According to the police, the suspect as punishment, used a spatula to beat the 10-year-old and inserted Aboniki balm (methyl salicylate ointment) inside her private parts and her eyes. The suspect also allegedly inflicted teeth bites all over the girl’s body. It was after the girl fainted during the beating that her aunt rushed her to a hospital in the Ajah area, but she was rejected. Amodu then took her niece to a military hospital on the Victoria Island, but the victim was referred to the Military Hospital, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. It was at the military hospital that a non-governmental organisation, Hands that Care, took over the case and reported it to the police.
The suspect, crying profusely, said she only beat her niece on three occasions. That the victim was her uncle’s daughter and she would never attempt to kill her.

“I am very sorry for my action. I did not envisage what happened. The first time she wet the bed, I warned her to stop bedwetting because she is too old for that. She was left under my care by her father who is my uncle, so I needed to correct her. This is the second time she wet the bed and I needed to teach her a lesson. As I was beating her, she passed out. She was released to me by her father when I told him about the strange sickness that used to hit me because I was lonely and needed a companion.”

The victim could not talk much, but when asked if she was tortured by her cousin, she nodded in approval. National Coordinator of the Hands that Cares, Mrs. Jacinta Nworie, said  the girl was released to the suspect by her father in Kogi State because Amodu promised to train her in Lagos.
“The victim told us that the suspect bit her, inserted ointment into her private part and used stick to beat her up.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who expressed shock over the incident, described Amodu’s action as wicked.

She said:
“On February 29, 2014, the police at Onikan Division got information that a little girl was in one hospital in critical condition. The officers went there and found the victim with her face and hands swollen as a result of beating. The victim was later referred to the Military Hospital, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi for better treatment. An NGO, Hands that Care, was invited into the case by a good Nigerian. The NGO said it would settle the girl’s hospital bills, but called for Amodu’s prosecution.

It was learnt that the family members were already pleading that the victim and the suspect be released to them, saying it was a family matter. But a police source said since the victim was a minor, the government would decide if the case should be treated as a family matter or not.

SANUSI FINALLY EXPOSES NIGERIA TO THE WORLD: How Oil Money Is Shared By The Cabal In Abuja (MUST READ)

In a country where untold oil wealth disappears into the pockets of the elite, the oil corruption scheme he was investigating seemed outsize — and he threatened to lay it bare at a meeting with Nigeria’s top bankers.

The rabble-rouser was none other than the governor of the country’s central bank. Weeks later, however, he was out, fired by Nigeria’s president in an episode that has shaken the Nigerian economy, filled newspapers and airwaves here, and even inspired a rare street demonstration.

The bankers were going to have to open their books, the governor, Lamido Sanusi, warned them at the recent meeting. He wanted to see where the money was going — $20billion from oil sales that, mysteriously, was not making its way to the treasury...

But his suspicions were cutting too close, Mr. Sanusi said — too close to an oil-politics nexus that both feeds the political establishment in Nigeria, in his view and that of analysts, and deprives the country of vital revenue.

The case of missing oil money is not new in Nigeria. In recent years, government commissions, parliamentary inquiries and civil society groups have all pointed to serious shortfalls in the disbursement of oil revenues. Their findings have been ignored. This time, the accusations appear not to be going away: Never before has an official of Sanusi’s level made them.

In interviews here, Mr. Sanusi gave a detailed account of the events that he said led to his ouster on Feb. 20, a dismissal that continues to depress the country’s currency and frighten investors. He said his warning to the bankers had been reported straight back to the threatened seat of power in the country’s capital, Abuja.

It was too much, he said. With his accusations, which outside analysts consider credible, the soft-spoken, bow-tied central banker appeared to have penetrated to the heart of the country’s entrenched corruption problem.

In 2009, Mr. Sanusi took aim at Nigeria’s failing banking sector, shutting down fraudulent banks, uncovering theft that led to an unprecedented conviction, and earning trust in international financial markets. He was named central bank governor of the year by The Banker magazine in 2011, and is a suited-up member of his country’s establishment, as an heir to the position of emir in the ancient northern city of Kano, one of Nigeria’s highest-status designations.

But then he began taking on the government oil agency, which determines whether oil-dependent Nigeria rises or falls. Specifically, he accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation — the agency that buys, sells, regulates and produces the country’s oil — of not turning over earnings to the country’s central bank. The country is Africa’s largest oil exporter, oil prices were steady or rising, yet Nigeria’s financial reserves were falling. It was a mystery. The money was missing. Mr. Sanusi said he feared an eventual collapse of Nigeria’s currency.

Backed by calculations, he presented his findings to a Nigerian Senate committee early in February. “A substantial amount of money has gone,” Mr. Sanusi said in an interview at the mansion reserved for the country’s central banker, which he will soon have to leave. “I wasn’t just talking about numbers. I showed it was a scam.”

At a time when political energy in Africa’s most populous country is focused on next year’s elections — and staying in power is costly for a governing party that functions as a patronage machine — Mr. Sanusi knew exactly which interests he had menaced, he said. He had been warned to “cool down.

“By making N.N.P.C. an issue now, the source of money for financing elections is threatened,” Mr. Sanusi said, referring to the petroleum corporation. “If this is stopped, there will be no money to finance the elections.”

On the other hand, if it was not stopped, the risk to Nigeria’s economy was grave, the central banker suggested. “It was critical that we stop this hemorrhage,” he said. “Otherwise, we can’t maintain stability. Reserves had gone way down. We would watch the naira collapse,” he said of the nation’s currency.

Alarmed, Mr. Sanusi said, he went in front of Nigeria’s top banking heads for a semimonthly meeting on Feb. 11 and “threatened to open the books of the bankers, to trace the money.” He suspected some were laundering stolen oil money.

“Some of them were not giving information about their accounts,” the central banker said. “I told them I would order a special examination.”

One of the bankers at the meeting said, referring to the Central Bank of Nigeria, “He made it clear to them that the C.B.N. would need to unravel what was going on, and they should cooperate.”

Many of the bankers became angry. “One of us said, ‘What next?’ “ a second banker said. “There was a general heaviness. He spoke tough.” Both bankers requested anonymity.

Panicked, several of the bankers went straight to the government, Mr. Sanusi said. Two of the bankers — he would not identify them — “went and reported to the petroleum minister,” he said. And at that moment, his days were numbered.

“The strategy of the government was to discredit the messenger,” he said. The Nigerian president “doesn’t want me to bring out any more information that would get them into trouble.”

Mr. Sanusi’s account is “untrue,” a spokesman for President Goodluck Jonathan said.

“Mr. Sanusi has been making all kinds of claims to project himself as a victim,” the spokesman, Reuben Abati, said in an email, accusing the former bank governor of “financial recklessness, abuse of mandate, incompetence and criminal acts of negligence.”

Mr. Sanusi has not been charged with any crimes, and the most Mr. Jonathan held him responsible for in a series of counteraccusations that emerged after the bank governor raised an alarm over the oil money was having perhaps “sidestepped civil-service rules.”

Outside analysts appear to be in large agreement that Mr. Sanusi’s claim of vast missing oil revenues is plausible.

Nigeria’s state oil sales “feature undue complexity, extensive discretion and well-documented flaws,” Revenue Watch, a group focused on natural-resource management, wrote in an examination of the central banker’s declarations. “In such a system, the line between mismanagement and corruption is difficult to draw, as shortcomings in process often benefit specific private interests.”

One such “shortcoming” was laid bare by Mr. Sanusi last month to the parliamentary committee: a phony subsidy on kerosene that he determined to be a racket, costing the Nigerian treasury billions of dollars and greatly benefiting what he called a “syndicate” of marketers and unknown others. Mr. Sanusi showed that any official subsidy on kerosene had long since been abolished, that the petroleum corporation was nonetheless selling kerosene to marketers at less than a third of its purchase price on the international market and that the Nigerian marketers were then selling kerosene to the public at prices 300 to 500 percent above what they had paid for it.

“It’s just a big scam,” Mr. Sanusi said in the interview. “The amount is shared by a cabal.”

Though his official term would have ended in June anyway, Mr. Sanusi said, he is challenging his removal in court. In a judiciary that is only lightly insulated from political pressure, the outcome is uncertain, though perhaps not with the wider public. One of the bankers at the Feb. 11 meeting said: “For me personally, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the position he has taken. We are Nigerians. We owe it to this country that things are run properly.”

One of Nigeria’s leading activists, Tunde Bakare, a founder of the pro-democracy organization Save Nigeria Group, said: “This is going to be tried in the court of public opinion. We can’t wish this matter away. Twenty billion dollars is not going to go away overnight.”

Manchester United snap up 16-year-old Swiss wonderkid from under the noses of European rivals

Dimitri Oberlin Mfomo's FC Zurich deal is running out and the attacking midfielder has chosen Old Trafford as his next destination

Manchester United are signing Swiss sensation Dimitri Oberlin Mfomo in the summer – and beating a host of European giants for the teen star, writes Alan Nixon in the Sunday People.
The 16-year-old attacking midfielder is choosing Old Trafford as his current deal at FC Zurich runs out.
Swiss youth sensation Mfomo can move for a low compensation fee and United will offer him an attractive package to join.
Striker Robin van Persie could be allowed to leave the club however - but only if £58m Edinson Cavani comes in.

Liverpool's Pepe Reina to trigger transfer release clause at the end of the season

Napoli want permanent deal for Kop keeper currently with them on a season's loan but Atletico Madrid are also interested in taking him home to Spain

Pepe Reina will activate a £4.5million release clause to end his long Liverpool tenure this summer.
The keeper is being pursued by both Atletico Madrid and Napoli, where he is currently on a year-long loan.
And after the Reds' manager Brendan Rodgers spelled out that the Spanish stopper has no future at the club, he will use the contract clause - set at €5m - to spark the move.
Reina said recently he was open to an Anfield return when his loan deal in Italy ends, but Rodgers shot that down by pointing out the keeper had already said goodbye to the club's fans in an open letter when he joined Napoli.
"I was surprised at the letter - when you are a loan player  I would expect that he should come back, but obviously Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli that he was looking to move," the Reds boss said recently.
"He penned a great big letter saying he was going to work with the best manager that he'd worked with and thanked for his time for Liverpool. So for me it probably sounded like he'd made his decision there."
Now, Reina has insisted he has two years left on his contract and could return to Anfield, but he also pointedly suggested, in a BBC interview, that Rafa Benitez - who took him to Merseyside in 2005 and re-signed him for Napoli - is the best coach he's ever worked with.
When asked if the door was shut on a Liverpool return, the 31-year-old said: "That is what the manager says apparently but I have two years left on my contract.
"Liverpool got another goalkeeper and they told me they were happy to loan me for a season. It was strange but I don't regret it.
"There are always up and downs in a career and in the last two-and-a-half years at Liverpool there were different methods and perhaps I didn't do as good as I used to with Rafa.

Manchester City have 'no intention' of selling Sergio Aguero says manager Manuel Pellegrini

The Chilean coach plays down reports that the Argentina striker could leave the Etihad in the summer

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has dismissed reports linking striker Sergio Aguero with a move away from the club.
Despite injuries threatening to derail the Argentina star's season, the forward has still bagged 15 Premier League goals this term.
Aguero has scored 73 goals in 113 appearances for City since moving from Atletico Madrid for around £38m in 2011, and his consistent form has reportedly attracted the interest of La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona.
However, Pellegrini insisted that Aguero simply is not for sale.
The Chilean coach said: "I don't think the idea of Sergio is to leave Manchester City.
"Big clubs do not sell their best players and I don't think Sergio will be going anywhere.
"Sergio is very happy here. You never know what can happen in the future, but he is a very important player here."
City's Quadruple dream is over after they were humbled by Championship side Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday.
The Latics emerged victorious at the Etihad, while City's Champions League hopes appear slim as they prepare to face Barcelona at Camp Nou with a 2-0 deficit from the first leg.
The Premier League pressure is also on the Citizens after leaders Chelsea opened up a nine-point gap over the weekend.
However, Pellegrini's side will head back to the summit if they win their three games in hand.

Ronaldo beats Messi to top the Goal Rich List 2014

The Real Madrid star takes over from retired 2013 winner David Beckham at the top of our index, with Samuel Eto'o, Wayne Rooney and Kaka rounding off the top five

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the world's richest footballer after topping the annual list of players' net worth compiled by Goal.

The Real Madrid superstar held off Barcelona rival Lionel Messi in the Goal Rich List 2014 with an estimated wealth of €148 million.

The Goal Rich List is collated by a team of analysts and takes into account all streams of revenue for active footballers over the course of their careers.

Ronaldo succeeds David Beckham, who led the way on the 2013 list but called time on his playing career last May.

Only current professionals are eligible with the earnings of more than 200 contenders assessed before Goal's experts finalised the top 10.

Ronaldo has enjoyed a remarkable 12 months in which his value to club and country has never been more evident.

He scored all four goals as Portugal beat Sweden in the World Cup play-offs, landed the 2013 Ballon d'Or and signed a record-breaking new five-year deal with Madrid.

Messi came in second after inspiring Barcelona to the Spanish title and signing up for a range of lucrative endorsements. It was a mixed year for the Argentinian, however, who appeared in a Spanish court in September to testify over alleged tax fraud relating to commercial contracts and lost his grip on the Ballon d'Or after a year blighted by injuries.

Wayne Rooney makes the top four on the list following Manchester United's decision to offer him the biggest contract in British football history, worth €365,000 a week.

Neymar's controversial transfer to Barcelona sees him rocket up the standings to sixth, with his parents' €40m 'compensation' payment included Goal's figures due to its game-changing significance.

The rest of the list is made up of global superstars, who have accrued huge wealth over significant spells at the top of the professional game.

Samuel Eto'o is at number three, ahead of Rooney, thanks largely to the millions he earned at Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, with Kaka, Ronaldinho, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gianluigi Buffon and Thierry Henry completing the top 10.

'Bury my books with me' - OAU student who committed suicide

The last note by Dipo Ige, the 400l law student of Obafemi Awolowo University, who committed suicide last Monday (Read it here), was that his books should be buried with him, Punch reports.

Ige was buried yesterday Sunday March 9th at his hometown in Iree, Osun State.

Punch reports that in his suicide note which they obtained, Ige asked that his girlfriend should not be blamed for his death. Friends of Ige had earlier said he committed suicide because the lady dumped him.

Part of the note read, “As I plan to end my life, please bury my books with me. My reason for this action is best known to me. Please don’t blame my girlfriend (name withheld). She knows nothing about this. Share my properties accordingly to…”

Fresh facts, however, emerged on Sunday that Ige sent a message to his mum before his action. It was learnt that due to network problem, the message did not get to his mum until over an hour after it was sent.

A close friend to Ige, who pleaded anonymity narrated, “That day about 9pm, Ige sent a text message to his mum. He told her to come to Ile-Ife immediately, adding that any delay could mean that the mum would meet him dead.

“When she eventually got the message around 10pm, she immediately alerted his close friend, Bola Okiji, to check on him. Unfortunately, Okiji was not in Ile-Ife, he was at Ilesha.

“The mum sent another lady living close to him to check him. The lady met Ige’s door locked. She peeped through the key hole and saw Ige, who appeared lifeless. She screamed, broke the door and raised the alarm, which attracted the neighbours.”

However, Okiji insisted that his friend hung himself because of “academics love.”
He said Ige was a brilliant student in second class upper grade before his death.
