Courtois Snr Says: No Barcelona approach for his Son Thibaut Courtois

The goalkeeper's father does not want his son to be competing with Petr Cech for a Chelsea place next season but believes that the Catalans are chasing Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Barcelona have not made any approach for Thibaut Courtois, according to the goalkeeper's father.

The Chelsea starlet, who is on loan at Atletico Madrid for a third season, wants clarity on his future at his parent club, with the Blues having a decision to make between the talented youngster and Petr Cech, whose impressive form has continued into 2013-14.

Courtois's desire for first-team football next season prompted rumours that he could replace the soon-to-depart Victor Valdes at Camp Nou, but the Belgian's father believes that the Catalans have opted to pursure Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Borussia Monchengladbach instead.

"There has never been an approach from Barcelona," Courtois senior told RTBF.

"Their future keeper will apparently be Ter Stegen so there was never any question to sign Thibaut there. The press talked a lot, but their technical director chose another type of stopper."

The youngster's father echoed his son's position on the importance of being first choice at whichever club for whom he plays next season, while understanding that Cech's form may rule out a return to Stamford Bridge.

"Chelsea have a good goalkeeper in Cech, so cohabitation with both is not possible," he continued. "Alternating between the two is possible on paper but this is not what we want. This is not a situation we want.

"For now, we expect to discuss with Chelsea but it is impossible for Courtois to join a club to be their No.2 and the conclusion is the same for Petr Cech."

Of his son's performance, the older Courtois enthused: "Every week he dazzles us. He produces big performances and his team continues to amaze and produce good results, in part thanks to him. This is a big success. It goes beyond our expectations.

"He is very happy. He does not bother about tomorrow and plays it game by game and works every day to improve. He is happy to be appreciated by his team-mates and the staff.
