Barcelona's Xavi insists Leo Messi doesn't need World Cup medal to be best ever

The La Masia graduate thinks Messi has been key in every one of his appearances over the last seven years

Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez says Lionel Messi can be the best player of all time - regardless of his performance at this summer's World Cup.

The European Championship and World Cup winner suggests that a World Cup medal is not a requirement for being the best player ever.

Messi lost out to Cristiano Ronaldo for this year's Ballon D'or prize, after winning the previous three trophies.

Speaking to the Sun on Sunday, the man who has won everything in the game said: "Leo doesn't need to win the World Cup to be considered the best player ever.

"I say that for those who demand he wins the World Cup to be considered the greatest ever in history."

Xavi points to the continued impact Messi has had on matches in the last seven years.

"He's decisive in every game he's played in for six or seven years," Xavi concluded
